Setting up your espresso machine for
    the first time

    1

    Switch on

Once you're switched on, follow the prompts on the display. You can select your language and whether you want to install the water filter now.

    2

Place water filter and test water hardness

Install the filter into the tank using the mounting aid at the other end of the scoop. If you are not using a water filter, test the hardness of your water with the testing strips, then enter that level into your machine.

    3

    Fill the water tank

Next, fill up the water tank to the max line with fresh water from the tap, slot it into place and close the lid.

    4

    Fill the bean hopper

Pour your favourite beans into the bean hopper, or add pre-ground coffee to the dedicated chute next to the hopper. Put the lid back on.

    5

    Automatic heat and rinse

A HEATING UP and RINSING message appears on the display.

NB, the machine will run a rinse through the dispenser each time you turn it on and off. Rinsing pre-heats the system for the ideal brewing temperature, then flushes away residue afterwards. Just remember to place an empty 0.7 L (24 Oz) container under the dispenser to catch the rinse water.

Get to know your home espresso machine

You'll soon have the hang of your new machine, it's simple to use and will quickly become part of your day. Let's get to know the different parts.

    Power switch

The on/off switch is at the side, just give it a press and watch your machine spring into action.

    Bean hopper

Fill and store your favourite coffee beans.

    Pre-ground coffee bypass

Fancy something different that's already ground? Or maybe decaf? Just skip what's in the grinder with this handy chute.

1.8 L water tank and filter

Makes at least 16 espresso shots¹ in a single fill.

    Drip tray

Say goodbye to spills – the tray catches them. It even has an 'empty me' reminder when it gets too full.

How do I make my first drink?

Now for the best part – your first drink. It’s wonderfully intuitive, so you’ll feel at home straight away.
Just follow the steps below and you’re off.

    1

Put your cup on the tray

Adjust the height of the dispenser if needed and make sure to place your cup directly under the nozzles on the drip tray.

If you're making 2 drinks at once, align the cups carefully, one under each nozzle, and select the 2 cup option.

    2

    Choose your drink

Use the touchscreen buttons to scroll to your dream drink. Then you can personalize it by temperature, strength and size, until it's just right.

    3

Press play and watch it go

It's as easy as that! If you liked the settings you chose, you can save them to your user profile to keep. Then just keep experimenting.

    4

Make iced espresso and iced coffee

If you select the Iced Espresso or Iced Coffee drink option, your machine will remind you to add ice to your cup first. These settings brew at a lower temperature that helps keep your coffee tasting smooth and balanced as it cools. Then add milk, or whatever you fancy.

    5

    Connect the milk container

If you're making a milk-based drink, fill the milk container with your chosen milk. Put one end of the hose in the container and connect the other end to the dispenser.

What can I make with my espresso machine?

You've got your very own café counter at home. From a rich espresso to a velvety cappuccino, there’s a whole line up waiting. With the steam wand, you can froth and texture milk your way, opening up even more possibilities. And that’s just the start. Play around with syrups, switch up the milk, add a dash of spice, or try it over ice. It’s your menu now.

    Espresso

The shot of coffee loved the world over. Water is forced through the grounds to make 30-45 ml of pure espresso. Makes one or two cups simultaneously.

    Coffee

Fans of drip coffee may prefer this option, which makes a full cup of black coffee with a full and round flavour. Makes one or two cups simultaneously .

    Iced espresso

Espresso poured over ice for a bold, chilled hit – bright, intense and beautifully smooth. Add a dash of milk, a hint of syrup, or whatever you fancy. Makes one or two cups simultaneously.

    Iced coffee

Brewed coffee poured over ice – ready for a splash of milk, a swirl of vanilla, or a scoop of ice cream. Makes one or two cups simultaneously.

    Espresso lungo

A ‘long’ espresso with a bit more water and less intense taste. It’s extracted more slowly and there’s more to sip. Makes one or two cups simultaneously.

What do the icons on the touchscreen mean?

The color touchscreen makes it easy to explore everything your machine can do. From choosing your drink to adjusting strength, size and temperature, each icon is designed to guide you through. You’ll also find quick access to user profiles, settings and cleaning, so everything is right where you need it.

How to clean and care for your machine

To keep your fully automatic espresso machine KF4 working at its best, you'll get into a simple routine of care. No need to keep track, as you'll be prompted to run a clean cycle by notifications. Or you can run one anytime by selecting the cleaning menu.

    1

    Regular care

Wash the drip tray when it gets full, empty used coffee from the puck container and give the machine a wipe with a damp cloth. None of the removable parts of the machine are dishwasher safe, simply rinse with warm water.

    2

Start up and shut down rinse

When it switches on, it gives itself a quick rinse to warm the internal pipes and brew unit, then another rinse when it shuts down

It's helpful to put an empty container under the spout, before rinses, to collect the water and prevent the drip tray from getting too full.

    3

    Easy milk rinsing

After you've made a milk-based drink, the display instructs you to do a milk rinse of the machine and hose, and guides you through this easy process. Again, remember to pop a container underneath the spout.

    4

    Deeper cleaning

When deeper care is needed, easy on-screen alerts guide you through every process. From deep milk system cleaning and cleaning the brew unit, to using the auto-descaling program, you'll know exactly what to do, and when.
